Date Rape Drugs

There has been publicity over a number of different drugs reportedly having been used in recent rapes. In May, 1998, it became a criminal offence to be in possession of the most well known of these drugs, Rohypnol, without a prescription. This is now punishable by up to two years in jail with an unlimited fine.  The drug which is known as the "Drug Of Choice" is one that single women travelers need to be extra careful about, especially when traveling overseas

The makers of the drug have taken certain steps to prevent its misuse:

  1. It has been colored blue

  2. It will fizz on contact with a liquid

  3. It will float at the top of a drink for about 20 minutes after having been placed in the liquid.

Police evidence surrounding the use of 'date rape drugs' is extremely limited. Forensic evidence of many drugs are often difficult to obtain, as traces of the drugs may not remain in the body for long periods of time. There have been reports of both men and women having been raped under the influence of drugs given to them.

A number of other drugs are thought to have been used in date rapes, including methadone, LSD and ecstasy.

Some tips on how to avoid falling victim to date rape drugs:
